ST. PAUL, Minn. - A key committee of the Minnesota Senate is taking up the $1 billion Vikings stadium bill.
The hearing Friday afternoon in the Senate Taxes Committee is the proposed public subsidy's likely last stop before votes on the House and Senate floors. But that's if it survives the hearing in a committee that includes many stadium critics.
The chairwoman, Sen. Julianne Ortman, warns her committee is "not for the faint of heart." She says it's not usually good tax policy to divert state tax dollars to the benefit of a specific business, as is proposed in the Vikings bill.
But Ortman says she also realizes the importance of the Vikings to Minnesota. She says her young son has been lobbying her hard to pass the stadium bill.
