GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- After a nine-month renovation, Byerly's held a grand reopening Thursday for its Golden Valley store -- the very first Byerly's store to ever open.
"We are really, really excited," Gina Jacobson, prompting a sarcastic response from her sister.
"I never thought my sister would get this excited about a grocery store," Casey King said.
The Golden Valley Byerly's store originally opened in 1968. It was a pioneering grocery store because it was open 24 hours a day and had carpeting.
"I remember coming here 42 years ago when it first opened," said food guru Sue Zelickson. "It was the most exciting supermarket in the whole state -- in fact, in the whole Midwest."
Sue and Richard Peterson moved to Minnesota from California a few months after the store opened.
"It was the nicest grocery store we'd ever been in," she said.
Forty-two years later, this store is now the site of another first: Byerly's Creations, which is an entire section of the store devoted to fresh, ready-to-serve food.
"We've always evolved, but to come back to the original store that case the dye for Byerly's was -- from our team's perspective -- one way to refresh our entire brand," said Tres Lund, CEO of Lund Food Holdings.
